He was born in 1940 in Istanbul. In 1956, he graduated from Yapi Vocational High School. In 1961, he studied at Istanbul State School of Applied Fine Arts (now known as Marmara University) Department of Decorative Painting. In 1963, he won a Federal Germany Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) art scholarship and did research on wall painting and techniques at the architecture studio of the Stuttgart Academy. He joined the teaching staff of İstanbul State School of Applied Fine Arts in 1960. He completed his proficiency in art education at Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts.In 1965, he worked as a lecturer at Marmara University, Atatürk Faculty of Education. In 1985, he became a professor at Marmara University, Faculty of Fine Arts, and in the same year, he became the Head of the Department of Painting. Between 1985-96, he produced original printmaking at Çamlıca Art House. He worked on printing techniques at Salzburg Summer Academy, where he was invited in 1970. Then in 2004, 2009, and 2015, he produced original printmaking within the Istanbul Museum of Graphic Arts. Pilevneli, whose works are exhibited in Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Belgium, United States, and at the Oslo Biennial, continues to live and work in Istanbul.
