ONAY AKBAŞ

He was born in 1964 in Fatsa, where he later completed primary school. Between 1974 and 1980, he completed his secondary education at Kastamonu Abdurrahman Paşa High School, and his high school education at Fatsa High School. He completed his higher education at Marmara University Atatürk Education Faculty Painting Department between 1980-85.

In 1985, he started his professional art life by opening his first studio in the Maltepe district of Istanbul. Here he took part in the foundation of the formation known by the art community as the Painters of Maltepe.  In 1987, he recognized with an awared atv the Bandırma Bird Paradise Festival painting contest. Between 1987-1988, he worked as an art teacher at İzmir Maltepe Military High School for a year.In 1988, he settled in Paris and opened his first studio there. In 1989, within the events surrounding the 200th anniversary of the French revolution, he organized his first solo exhibition at Galerie Sero Paris.

In 1991, together with a group of artists and theorists of different nationalities, he founded the formation called Le chainon manquant, and this group participated in many mixed manifestations, especially in many art fairs.This group ended its activities with the death of the Argentine painter Aznar.In 1992 he was awarded the Painting First Prize at the Beaujolais art awards in France. Between 1995 and 2005, he was one of the consultants and participating artists of the Mac 2000 art fair for 11 years, which is still continuing in Paris. Between 2003-2006, he opened his own art gallery, Espace d'art contemporain l'autre, in Paris.In 2007, he was a jury member in Marin, France's most prestigious art award in the field of visual arts. In 2010, within the official program of the Turkey Year celebrations in France, he held two solo exhibitions at the Lyon Biennale -Galerie Regard sud and then at the Gallery crous des Beaux-Arts Paris. He worked on printmaking at IMOGA in 2015.

Since 1988, he has participated in exhibitions in many art fairs around the world, primarily Art Miami, Art Zurich, Art Geneve, Mac 2000 Paris, S'tart-Strasbourg, Manif-Seoul, and Art Taipei-Taiwan. He has organized over 50 solo exhibitions in many countries thus far, and his works have been exhibited in many group exhibitions. His works are found in many private and legal collections and museums around the world.In addition to exhibition catalogs published in multiple languages, he has 4 comprehensive books written by various art historians and critics about his art, again in English, French, Chinese and Turkish. Numerous interviews, articles, criticism and analysis articles about his art were published in magazines and newspapers, on TV and radio programs in many countries. The artist is the recipient of the Turkish Journalists Association Sedat Simavi Awards 2014 Visual Arts Award.
